Last week in Relief Society we had a lesson about service. The teacher had asked several women in our ward to tell a time when they have benefited from someones service or a time when they helped someone in need. One lady who was asked to share was a young dental hygienist in our ward. She shared how once a month her office does service work for those who cannot afford dental care. This last month she was supposed to go volunteer and really was not in the mood. She didn't want to leave her kids, she was not feeling well and she felt overwhelmed. She went however and she had a patient come in who was so grateful for the cleaning that he cried the whole time. This man had not been able to have his teeth cleaned for 10+ years because he could not afford it. She said she was amazed at how appreciative this man was to have his teeth cleaned and he could not stop telling her how thankful he was.
I know cleaning teeth is not the most glamorous skill, but it is something that everyone needs. I am glad that I have a knowledge of oral health and that I can put into practice my skills to help others. Everyday that I am in clinic I am seeing people who have a desire to better themselves in one way or another. I am so glad I can play a small part in the changes they make.
